Gentry Public Schools to Implement Statewide Phone-Free Policy for 2025-2026 School Year
Gentry Public Schools will join all Arkansas public schools in implementing a phone-free policy during the school day, starting with the 2025-2026 academic year, as part of the new Bell to Bell, No Cell Act. Signed into law on February 20, 2025, this legislation prohibits students from using cell phones throughout the school day, with limited exceptions for medical needs or emergencies.
Our district was ahead of this change, having already introduced a phone-free environment for Gentry High School and Gentry Middle School earlier this year using Yondr pouches. This system secured students’ phones in lockable pouches during school hours, ensuring they remained focused on their learning and personal development. The results have been overwhelmingly positive, aligning with the goals of the statewide policy.
There are currently no plans to implement Yondr pouches in our primary and intermediate buildings. Despite this, the new law still applies to all schools, meaning cell phones will not be permitted during the school day in any building across the district.
Why the Change?
The Bell to Bell, No Cell Act was introduced to:
Eliminate distractions so students can focus more effectively on their education.
Promote social interaction and reduce reliance on screens.
Support students' mental well-being by fostering a focused learning environment.
What This Means for Gentry Public Schools:
Cell phones will be prohibited during school hours at all grade levels.
School-issued devices like tablets will still be allowed for educational purposes.
Students with medical needs requiring phone use will receive accommodations.
This policy is a step toward creating an environment where students can thrive academically and socially. Parents are encouraged to discuss this change with their children and reinforce the importance of minimizing distractions at school.
